Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English.  Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse or just general uselessness (go here to read more about how the words were chosen).  Here are the words/phrases they'd like to see banished in 2014-

selfie, twerk/twerking, hashtag, Twittersphere, Mr. Mom, T-bone, ____on steroids, the suffixes-ageddon, and -pocalypse added to anything and everything, from the world of politics the words-intellectually/morally bankrupt and Obamacare, and from the world of sports the words-adversity and fan base

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?
Can I pick all of them?  Yes, I thought I could!

2. What one unfinished project nags at you begging to be completed in this new year?
Cleaning out totes in the basement. I absolutely dread going through all of them.  There are some that we haven't looked through since we moved here...9 years ago.

3. When did you last have a bowl of soup? What kind? Homemade or from a can? What's your favorite soup?
CH & I really like the Progresso Italian Wedding Soup.  I'm not a huge soup fan, but I will fix a quick bowl of Ramen every now & then.

4. Snowed in, snowed under, snow job...which one most applies to your life in recent days, figuratively speaking.
Ha!  Funny you should ask!  Today is Day 3 of our extended break.  Not really because of the 1 inch of snow we got Sunday night, which, by the way, is still on the ground (so you know it's cold if it lasts more than 1 day in the South!).  The cold weather is keeping schools closed.

5. What's the funniest movie you've ever seen, or at least one of the funniest?
Rat Race.  I loaned it to a friend a few weeks ago, and she loved it!

6.  In general, would you say you're clumsy?
No.  I have my clumsy moments, but overall, I'm not.  Not to give you the wrong idea:  I'm definitely not graceful, but not clumsy either.

7. Elvis Presley was born on Hodgepodge Day (January 8th) back in 1935.  Are you an Elvis fan?  What's your favorite Elvis tune? If that's too hard, which Elvis tune do you dislike the least?  Click here for a list of his songs.
Not an Elvis fan at all.  I don't really care for his voice.  "Can't Help Falling in Love" is just about the only one I can tolerate.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
Have y'all seen this clip?  The only thing that's missing is his southern accent!

  1. Our school system is closed again today-due to the cold temps. I always worry about the kids who come to school for a hot meal and to get warm during this time. I needed this little break, though, but hopefully will get back into the groove tomorrow :)

  2. I'm with Tammy...I think for some kids, school is a better option than home in terms of heat and a warm meal. Why do they close for the entire day? We had a 90 min delay yesterday, but never got above 3. Today its similar, but they're open regular hours. We are supposed to get out of single digits today. Stay warm!

  4. In today's times, the school closings may be a good thing, yet, I can help but think about those that have to be at home by themselves while both parents are trying to get to work in this nasty weather!! Hope they have adult supervision for the younger ones.

And I'm sure behind it all, the school districts don't want any law suits...you know how things are these days.

This clip ...what's with that? Too funny. Poor guy. LOL

  6. I also have totes in the basement that need to be gone through. That video clip is funny but he forgot the eggs! Why is it that bread, milk and eggs are what everyone runs for?!

  7. Our schools closed again today Mary? My sister had the past 2 days off, but she is starting to climb the walls! She is at a k-8th school in Knoxville! laura

  8. I totally understand abut the totes in the basement! My goal is to get completely unpacked so that I don't have any of those.

    I'm dreaming. : )

    Stay warm!

  9. Going thru totes is no fun. I save that chore for spring because our basement is too cold to work in otherwise.

  10. We went to school every day this week. Monday was a regular day. I left my house a little later so I could see to cross the Tallapoosa River Bridge. Tuesday we delayed for two hours...it was 8 degrees. I had to go through two areas with skating ponds in the road (two busted water lines)...and today at 10...we went in a regular time. I am glad we do not have to make up the days...but really loved that 2 hour delay yesterday. I hope you stay safe....loved the milk and bread video. Frank and I went to Walmart Sunday after church to get a few things we actually needed...bread being one...and there was only specialty breads....good thing that is what we went after. I could get all the Jewish Rye I wanted.

  11. The Governor of our state (MN) ordered all schools Monday, and left it up to te individual districts for Tuesday. I think they were all closed then also. At my house I had -27 on Monday morning and -25 on Tuesday. That doesn't include the wind chill which was probably -35 - -40. But really cold is cold right?

  12. I agree! Perhaps all those words can go away. ;) Anyway i have the same problem with our basement! We couldn't even get to most of our Christmas stuff. ;/ Also we moved here about 8 years ago, it just gets more and more cluttered.

  13. I laughed when I saw the question about soup. I'm not a big fan of soup either but I did have a bowl of minestrone soup in our motherhouse dining room today because it was so cold. The soup was homemade and really hit the spot. One of the sisters I love with loves Progresso soup of all kinds (she is Italian) and usually buys some when she goes shopping. As for cold & snow? We've actually had two days off work because of snow--one before Christmas and one last week. Most unusual! This morning it was 9degrees when we left for work! It's even cold inside. I'm wearing a blue turtleneck, a blue sweater, and a blue sweatshirt jacket. At least I'm coordinated!

  14. Its like shopping when we go through totes... so much we forget we even own. How sad is that.

  15. I thought for sure I'd be the only one not too keen on Elvis. My family is also still colded in!! Enjoy the quiet :)

  16. It said my comment didn't go through. It's happened a few times today. I have two bins from our move 7 years ago and I'm sure when I go through them I will find things that I can't live without! Hope it warms up for you soon....love the video.

  17. We had almost the same answer to #2 ... basement cleaning/tidying. Ugh. It's so cold in the basement (with the cold temps we've been having) that that project is going to have to wait another couple of months at least, until it warms up enough for me to be able to stand to spend a day or two in the basement. ;-)

We have the same thing going on here in Illinois ... as soon as there's snow in the forecast, there's a run on milk, eggs and bread. I guess everyone wants to make French toast.

  18. Hmmm, I don't know about you all back east, but out here in southern California we declare a state of emergency whenever it gets below 50 degrees. Pretty sure we pay a sunshine tax... just sayin... ;-) Hope you all thaw out soon!

  19. I haven't been out of the house since Monday because of the ice and snow. I stayed cuddled under the afghans.

  20. That clip is hilarious. Funny for us….we hardly use bread OR milk. It would be more like: "gotta get the wine and cheese!"
I can do without tweaking or selfie for sure.
    Stay warm!!!

  21. Sounds like a good chilly trip. I always think it is strange to hear my Florida sister say it is 'cold' there...but I guess if you're camping, you can say that!
