Soggy Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English...here's the list for 2013-

fiscal cliff, kick the can down the road, double down, job creators/creation, passion/passionate, yolo (an acronym for you only live once), spoiler alert, bucket list, trending, superfood, boneless wings, and guru

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why. Go here to read more about how the words were chosen.

Fiscal Cliff.  I'm just tired of hearing the phrase.  And, while we're at it, "Make no mistake" is another one.

2.  When was the last time you rode a train?  Where did you go?
Last Christmas for CH's company's party.  They switch out having adult-only parties and family parties.  Last year was the family one, and we rode an old steam train.

3. Bagels-yay or nay?  Favorite 'flavor'?  Favorite topping?
I love bagels!  Panera has a cinnamon bagel that is really good.  They also have a cheese one that's good, too.  And, you just have to have cream cheese to go with it, right?

4.  'Tis the season of awards shows...if you could star in a movie already made which one would you choose?
Oh, geez!  I would say "Last Holiday".  If nothing else, to see the scenery.

5. The move towards single gender classrooms has been making the news in recent months....what say you?  Do you think kids perform better if seperated by gender and are taught differently or is that discrimination?  If you're a parent, is this something you'd support in regard to your own children?
I could see how it might be a good idea, but Lord have mercy on that teacher who has the male class!

6. What's your favorite thing about staying in a hotel?
Not having to worry about making the bed.

7. Do you have a 'word' for 2013?  What's the story behind your choice?
Nope, no "word" for 2013.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
This rain as GOT.TO.STOP.  Seriously.  I spent almost all day yesterday in the basement with the shop vac, trying to stay ahead of the water.  I had to stop to go to the oral surgeon, and when I came back, more water than before.  We even had water bubbling up through a crack.  It's a bit unsettling to listen to bubbling water in your house.  At one point, the word "geyser" came to mind.
I called YS out of his winter guard practice so he could stop by my parents' house to get their shop vac, then come home to help me.  That was a huge help.  Then, one of my brothers texted me to see if we wanted to use theirs.  At one point, we had 3 shop vacs going in various places in the basement.  Water seemed to be seeping in from everywhere right before CH got home.  I haven't felt that overwhelmed in a long time.
We had to take my parents' shopvac back to their house after a few hours.  Their basement held out a lot longer than ours, but finally succumbed to the rain.  Anyone here whose basement isn't flooded is very, very lucky.
CH went out in the yard and cleared out a pipe that drains water from the gutter away from the house (thank you, Daddy!).  That seemed to help a whole lot.  Lesson learned:  make sure those leaves get blown away next year!  This is just a ridiculous amount of water.  When we moved into the house, we had water in the basement, but have had no problem in the past 8 years since we took action to steer the water away from the house.  Luckily, we don't 'think' anything is ruined:  the carpet in the man-cave doesn't appear to be wet anywhere, and the walls appear to be dry.  Let's just hope that when everything dries we don't get a surprise!
If you're in the rain, I really hope you're not having to deal with this.  I have a whole new appreciation for hurricane victims!
This was taken "at the beginning".  Gotta love an older home and a lot of rain!

  2. I know that feeling. We had water come thru the floor in our basement in NJ 20 years ago-not this house, but our first house here. It was a nightmare-we had the house on the market!! We had a tremendous amount of snow that year, including a foot in April that melted in a day and the ground could just not contain it. You do kinda want to cry when you see it. Hope things have dried out some there today!

  3. You poor thing! Having major leaks is no fun, at all! So far, we've been very fortunate, but I wouldn't be surprised if something gives way if this rain continues much longer. I want it to END!

  4. Ugh! I'm so familiar with lots of rain - I've lost count of all the flooding we've had in the UK. Some people had just started rebuilding from the floods, then more floods came.

Praying for some sunshine to dry out your basement!

  6. Love Panera, but more for the soup than the bagels.

Hope you win the war with the water.

  8. I know what you mean about the rain...it is so depressing...gray, gray and more gray....and wet, wetter, wettest. The tallapoosa river near my house is out of its banks.

  10. The Panera cinnamon bagel must be da bomb, since I've seen it more than once! I'm going to have to try it!
Having my bed made for me was my hotel answer too. =)
    Have a great night!

  12. Wow with the water in the basements; never had to deal with that, it does sound like something you want to keep on top of. I agree with you about the "fiscal cliff" that is one word I really don't want to hear too much of. Now I want a bagel reading all these Hodgepodge ones with people's favorite ones :)

  13. So sorry about all the rain. I remember those days in Chicago when we had a basement and the water seeping in :(

  14. Amen to the first answer! I don't even have TV and I'm tired of hearing both of these. Make no mistake about it!

  15. Sorry about your basement! Hope the rain lets up soon.

Excellent bagel choices! I picked three and those were two of them!

  16. Hope your basement is good and dry now. We came home from a night out to discover that we had water in our basement at our old house ... 2-3" of water. It took forever with a wet vac to get all the water up ... and since we had a finished basement, we had the basement waterproofed.
