(for photography credit, click on the picture)There are different stories about the house, so I'll start with the facts first:
The house was entirely built using marble from a nearby town.
It was built to last for 1,000 years.
It took 8 years to build.
The owner believed that the end time was near, and he built the house so he would be able to survive the end time.
When his wife died, he was quoted as saying that her faith in eternal life was weak.
Now for the myths...or are they?
The owner built the house because he thought he would live forever, "The Forever House". (The current owner doesn't believe that this is true, but due to the self-sufficient details of the house- like a well and garden- he thinks that he believed he would live for at least 1000 years.)
He said his wife died because she didn't have enough faith.
There have been hauntings sited on the property. There were stories that if you sat beside the stone bathtub, the lady of the house would appear.
After the house was abandoned, it was vandalized, and almost everything that was in the house was stripped and stolen. There were reports of a picture of satan in the downstairs. One night when I was in high school, a friend of mine & I got brave (or so we thought!) and her brother drove us over the house. We were going to go in and go downstairs and have a look around. We never even made it to the door. We were walking toward it when we heard a sound. We did what any high school girls would do: we screamed and ran to the car. And, that was the last time I stepped foot on that property.
Someone bought the house a few years ago, and is renovating it by himself. He opens the house up for tours over Memorial Day Weekend, but I haven't taken the tour. To be perfectly honest, I'm still a bit spooked by the thought of it!
