There are different stories about the house, so I'll start with the facts first:The house was entirely built using marble from a nearby town.
It was built to last for 1,000 years.
It took 8 years to build.
The owner believed that the end time was near, and he built the house so he would be able to survive the end time.
When his wife died, he was quoted as saying that her faith in eternal life was weak.
Now for the myths...or are they?
The owner built the house because he thought he would live forever, "The Forever House". (The current owner doesn't believe that this is true, but due to the self-sufficient details of the house- like a well and garden- he thinks that he believed he would live for at least 1000 years.)
He said his wife died because she didn't have enough faith.
There have been hauntings sited on the property. There were stories that if you sat beside the stone bathtub, the lady of the house would appear.
After the house was abandoned, it was vandalized, and almost everything that was in the house was stripped and stolen. There were reports of a picture of satan in the downstairs. One night when I was in high school, a friend of mine & I got brave (or so we thought!) and her brother drove us over the house. We were going to go in and go downstairs and have a look around. We never even made it to the door. We were walking toward it when we heard a sound. We did what any high school girls would do: we screamed and ran to the car. And, that was the last time I stepped foot on that property.
Someone bought the house a few years ago, and is renovating it by himself. He opens the house up for tours over Memorial Day Weekend, but I haven't taken the tour. To be perfectly honest, I'm still a bit spooked by the thought of it!
Creepy! Interesting. But creepy! We have a lot of ghosts here in the Charleston area. I haven't taken all the tours because the ones I did take were creepy! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you for passing on the tour. I would be pretty spooked out by it, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting story. It's actually a very cool looking house in that picture. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm....that is intriguing! I think I might have to take the tour!
ReplyDeleteSounds so interesting. You should take the tour, I know I would love to see it!
ReplyDeleteA couple of Halloweens, the house was used as the local "haunted house". If I'm not mistaken, Lee and I took our younger brothers to it.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be able to resist the tour. However, it would have to be in the daytime. I really want to see a Stone House meant to last a thousand years!
ReplyDeleteCreepy....yet interesting. I will have to add this to my TN places to see list.
ReplyDeleteIt just so happens that I am going to be in the area on the Memorial Day weekend. My cousin and I are doing a family history research trip in Hancock county. We may have to take in the tour.
