Presidents' Day

Today is Presidents' Day, meaning most people have the day off today.  But here I go, getting ready to go to school for a full day with the students.  We need a day off...badly.  The teachers are tired, the kids are tired.  The good news:  Only 3 more weeks until Spring Break.
Back to Presidents' Day:  Last week my students played "February Bingo", and we talked about all of the pictures and what they had to do with February.  I usually have to explain to the kids that Washington's & Lincoln's Birthdays are in February, and then I explain how each of their birthdays used to be Federal Holidays, but then the government decided to combine the 2 and created "Presidents' Day".  I had a first grade group in my room, and when we came to Washington, one of my students proceeded to give my speech about how Presidents' Day came into being.  I was floored!  I couldn't believe that a 7 year old knew about that!  I'd bet money that a lot of adults don't know about it.  You've gotta love it when parents talk to their kids!
If you have the day off, how are you spending it?

  1. I have the day off. I'll probably have lunch with a friend who teaches at the school I used to (she has to work, so we'll go during her planning). I'm going to pop into my classroom to drop off the work I did yesterday. Then, I'm going to work on an assignment for my Reading Endorsement class. No rest for the weary, though, as you said, everyone was ready for a break.

  2. Way to go to those parents! In my house, after having a month off, I need to reel them back in so we are going to dabble in one or two subjects this week starting today.

  5. We're off. I've already been to the dentist and have another doctor appointment this afternoon. Then I thought I'd get my preps done for this week...we'll see about that, though!

  6. Schools, banks and P.O. are usually off, how come not you?
Anyway, I would have taught my children that but I don't know it myself. Sadly I was a bad student.
Well maybe not bad but I have a mind that doesn't hold onto information well.
